The Chinese Renminbi’s 100-yuan note reimagined: Mao’s portrait in teal and graphite, pierced by multiple painted bullet wounds across the face and the ornamental rose window.
Beijing’s decision to weaponise its currency, deliberately allowing the renminbi to fall below the symbolic level of 7 to the dollar, is here given a visual consequence.
The painting asks how many lives a currency has, and what happens when its image is as damaged as its value.
